Acolytes Ministry

Helpers at God's Altar

Acolytes are helpers and leaders whose role is to serve and assist the clergy and congregation in the Holy Eucharist and other services.

They have been around as long as there have been priests. Acolytes are part of the worship team – the clergy, choir and musicians, vergers, lay Eucharistic ministers, readers and intercessors – who together with the entire congregation join in worshiping God. Acolytes add dignity and majesty to the service.

Acolytes assist in processions by carrying processional crosses, torches, flags, books and other items. They also assist with the Communion by presenting the bread, water and wine to the priest or deacon preparing the table. Acolytes also may assist at weddings, baptisms and funerals
